Principles: Balance, Symmetry, Variety, Repetition, Emphasis, Domination, Subordination

Formalist Approach: Art's job is to be beautiful
-Focuses on elements and principles

Contextual Approach: Art's job is to make society better
-Focuses on what art is about

Media Approach: teaching at by exploring media

    FYI - there is a movement in art ed AWAY FROM structuring our curriculum around the elements and principles. I have some resources that describe this on my wiki: http://lesliegates.wikispaces.com/ArtEd+%3Fs. Might make an interesting topic for a paper or presentation.

    Thanks for the link. We are going to discuss the move away from formalism during the next class. I'm glad this is so interesting because it is the subject of our first paper (due on 9/10). I should have more notes up about this in a few days.
